Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate, has responded to the recently published book by Pope Francis, offering a unique perspective on Africa’s exploitation by Western powers. Titled ‘Hands off Africa’ and featuring a preface by renowned author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, the book sheds light on the continent’s plight.
The Vatican Publishing House carefully selected notable excerpts from the book, including the powerful statement, “Hands off Africa! Stop choking Africa: it is not a mine to be exploited, or a land to be plundered. May Africa be the protagonist of its own destiny!”
In light of Chimamanda’s contribution, Peter Obi, the former governor of Anambra state, expressed his satisfaction with the release of the thought-provoking book, ‘Hands Off Africa,’ authored by Pope Francis and enriched by the preface from our literary ambassador and esteemed global writer, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie.
Commending Pope Francis, Obi emphasized the need for Nigerian youth to rise and reclaim their country, echoing the sentiment expressed in the book that Africa must chart its own course. He stated, “The release of this timely book addresses the crucial issue of ending Africa’s exploitation by Western powers. As Pope Francis suggests, ‘May Africa be the protagonist of its own destiny!'”
Obi passionately urged Nigerians to take ownership of their nation, emphasizing that only Nigerians can save Nigeria. He recognized Nigeria as their sole country, one that necessitates their undivided attention and unwavering commitment for its future growth and development.
Reflecting on his previous rejection of dual citizenship from other countries, Obi highlighted his conscious decision to prioritize Nigeria as his only homeland, vowing to dedicate his efforts to the advancement of the nation and its positive role in shaping Africa’s trajectory.
According to Obi: “I have consistently called on Nigerians to take back their country because only Nigerians can save Nigeria. This is the only nation that we have, and it is ours to build and develop.
“When I rejected the dual citizenship of other countries years back, I was conscious that Nigeria as the only country that I have will need my full attention and commitment in the years to come.
“I remain committed to the progress of our nation, Nigeria, and to her continued constructive role in Africa”
