The Nigerian Labour Congress, NLC, has warned the people of Imo State to prepare for its impending indefinite industrial action.
Joe Ajero, the President of the labour union, in a press release, stated that the government of Imo State had intentionally terrorised residents of the state via unpleasant behavior of some officials entrusted with the State powers.
Ajero pointed out that via the Commissioner for Information in the State, the Imo State government had been spreading rumors in the Eastern Heartland.
He alleged that the government had turned the state into an extremely unpleasant and toxic environment.
NLC called on the residents of the state to stock up their houses with necessary items in preparation for the action against the State government.
Ajero pointed out that it was necessary for Imolites to stock up theirs houses with, especially basic needs, in order to survive the industrial action.
The imminent strike is attributed to about 20 months salary arrears some workers are owed, intimidation of labour leaders, the use of violence and thugs against the state workers, and the ghost worker tag and stigmatization of some state employees.
According to Ajero: “Hobbesian state of nature, a state once prided itself as the Eastern Heartland has become prevalent, exposing not just workers in the state but institutions and individuals to the most horrendous of scare, fear, and violence in their daily activities.
“In the pursuit of our legitimate strike action to restore sanity to the state’s industrial relations sphere, we wish to advise that those traveling to Imo state through the airport to look for other alternatives, those that make use of petroleum products should make efforts to seek alternatives and those that use electricity to seek other options outside the National Grid.
“We are resolved to press home our demands and until these infractions are remedied, we will continue escalating the industrial action till the government is compelled to show reason and restore meaningful and effective dialogue in the state.”
