The International Criminal Court, ICC, has issued an arrest warrant for Vladimir Putin, the President of Russia.
The ICC accused Putin of committing war crimes in Ukraine, including the illegal deportation of children to Russia from Ukraine.
ICC pointed out that the crime was perpetrated around February 24 2022.
The ICC charged the Russian President with involvement in the children’s deportation, saying it had reasons to believe that the crime was perpetrated directly or in collaboration with others, adding that Putin failed to restrain others who carried out the act.
Similarly, Maria Lvova-Belova, the Russia’s Commissioner for children’s right was declared wanted by the international court, so reports BBC
However, speaking on Thursday, Russia’s Foreign Ministry spokesman, Maria Zakharova, described the arrest warrant as meaningless, especially from legal perspective.
She added that ICC had zero powers to implement its judgements, and could merely exercise authority in countries who signed the treaty that gave birth to the court which Russia wasn’t part of.
According to the spokesperson: “The decisions of the International Criminal Court have no meaning for our country, including from a legal point of view.
“That is because despite the warrants, the ICC has no powers to arrest suspects, and can only exercise jurisdiction within countries who are signed up to the agreement that set up the court.
“Russia is not a signatory to that agreement – so it is unlikely either will be extradited
