The husband of late gospel artist Osinachi Nwachukwu, Peter, is set to start his defense in a case of alleged domestic violence and homicide brought against him by the Federal Government of Nigeria.
The High Court of the Federal Capital Territory has scheduled May 2 for commencement of the defense. Peter’s lawyer, I.A. Aliyu, has stated that he will be filing a “no case submission” against the charges, arguing that his client had zero case to answer.
The prosecution has already presented its witnesses before the court, including the deceased singer’s hairdresser, musician, children, family members, and a police officer.
The prosecution had charged Peter with 23 counts of domestic violence and culpable homicide, to which he pleaded not guilty.
The late singer’s family members had alleged that Peter had maltreated Osinachi, leading to her death.
Peter has been held at the Kuje Correctional Facility since his arrest and arraignment last year.
An autopsy report on the deceased had revealed no marks of violence but listed the causes of death as including organ pallor, leg swelling, fluid in the heart sac, tumor deposits, massively enlarged heart, and fluid around the lungs that restricted breathing.
Medical practitioners who appeared before the court also similarly gave their observation on the medical documents produced in court by the prosecution.
