In an effort to ensure a peaceful and secure environment during the presidential inauguration on May 29, the Department of State Services (DSS) has cautioned Nigerians against the dissemination of false information and actions that could exacerbate tensions within the polity.
The DSS has recently uncovered plans by certain groups to disrupt the inauguration ceremonies across the country.
According to Peter Afunaya, spokesperson for the DSS, the agency is fully aware of the intentions of these subversive elements, who seek to undermine the efforts of security agencies and create panic among the public.
In light of these alarming discoveries, the DSS has urged citizens, media organizations, and Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) to strictly adhere to security and civil protocols throughout the inauguration events.
The secret police strongly stressed on the need to avoid fake news, false alarms, biased reporting, and sensationalism, as such activities have the potential to ignite tensions and even violence prior to and following the inauguration.
Afunanya highlighted that the consequences of engaging in such activities would only serve to harm national unity and cohesion.
To ensure the safety of all attendees, the DSS has issued a warning to unauthorized and unaccredited individuals to refrain from entering restricted and designated areas at the inauguration venues.
While assuring the Nigerian populace of their continuous collaboration with sister security agencies, the DSS has called upon citizens to remain calm and law-abiding.
The agency has also announced that the President-Elect, Bola Tinubu, and Vice-President-Elect, Kashim Shetima, will be inaugurated on May 29 in Abuja, alongside the swearing-in of new state governors in most states across the country.
