The South African government has announced that Russian President Vladimir Putin could potentially face arrest if he attends the upcoming BRICS summit in August 2023.
This comes after the International Criminal Court (ICC) issued a warrant for Putin’s arrest on charges of war crimes back in March.
As a member of the ICC, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa is obligated to hand Putin over to investigators.
To study the international arrest warrant, Ramaphosa has appointed a special government committee, led by the country’s vice president.
According to the Heritage Times, “the committee will not be able to find any other options that would allow Putin to attend the summit in person.”
Therefore, South Africa has suggested that Putin participate via Teams or Zoom from Moscow.
Despite this, the Kremlin has not yet made a decision on whether Putin will attend the August summit. It’s important to note that Putin may face arrest in 123 countries that have ratified the Rome Statute, which South Africa is a member of.
